Using Rugs in Your Bathroom

in diy-projects

Years ago, it was not uncommon for people to install wall to wall carpeting in their bathrooms. When wall to wall carpeting became popular in the 1960s, hardwood floors were covered up and wall to wall carpeting was everywhere; even in the bathrooms and kitchens.

When it became apparent that wall to wall carpeting, especially the thick, shag carpeting of the 1960s and 1970s, was not really hygienic in the bathrooms, people began to rip it out. Tile replaced carpeting in the bathroom and linoleum in the kitchen and this practice still rings true till today.

However, no one really wants to step out of the bath or shower and onto a cold, tile floor. In addition to being uncomfortable, it is also dangerous. More accidents happen in the bathroom than anywhere else. Moreover, you do not have to follow rules that say you cannot use rugs to decorate your bathroom.

The good thing about decorating with rugs in the bathroom today is that newer bathroom rugs can easily be tossed into the washing and cleaned regularly. There are a variety of bathroom rugs on the market today and some of them are thick and luxurious while others are thinner.

When using rugs in the bathroom, make sure that the rugs that you choose meet the following criteria:

· Rugs for the bathroom should be washable in the washing machine using hot water

· They have a rubber backing that makes them slip resistant

Using rugs in your bathroom gives this room a warmer appeal and also gives you an opportunity to incorporate color in the room. By using rugs in your bathroom, you can get any type of look that you want. Bathroom rugs and shower curtains are not expensive, but can really add a dramatic flair to your bathroom. While changing the tiles and other fixtures in accordance with your changing style preferences can be a very costly affair, changing bathroom rugs and shower curtains can be done for less than $50.

Bathroom rugs enhance the safety and comfort factor of your bathroom. When placed next to the tub, they offer you a safe landing instead of a wet, slippery floor when you step out of the tub. Bathroom rugs can also be placed next to the vanity so you have something warm and comfortable under your feet instead of the cold, hard floor while you stand at the sink.

Washing them in hot water makes them fresh, clean and good as new. However, one caveat to using rugs in the bathroom is not to put the rugs in the dryer after you have washed them. The rubber back on the rugs tend to melt in the dryer and most likely tear off, making your bathroom rug easier to slide across the floor and a potential safety hazard.

Using rugs to decorate your bathroom is an excellent way to incorporate any color or style in this room without spending a lot of money in renovations.
