Transforming an Old Tired Bedroom Into a Stylish and Sophisticated New Look in Nine Simple Steps

Taking an old tired bedroom and transforming it with a stylish and sophisticated new look is as easy as 1, 2, 3. A fresh, new look doesn’t take a big budget and can be achieved in a few afternoons. To transform your bedroom into one of the most cherished rooms in the home, try these simple steps below:

1. Sort

Before starting any redecorating, it is important to weed out the clutter. Look around your room and sort through what you need and what you do not need. Pack up everything that is no longer useful to you, is not attractive, or that will just not “fit in” with your new room. Sorting through your items and packing them away or getting rid of them will allow your room the space and simplicity that you need for your new style.

2. Paint

One of the easiest ways to freshen a bedroom is with a fresh coat of paint. However, it is important to take the size and shape of the bedroom into consideration.

Small but Fat Rooms

To make a small but fat room appear narrower and deeper, use a cool color on the end wall and warm, dark colors on the side walls. This can be balanced by using by using a darker color in the bedspread, or wall hangings on the dark walls that use the hues of the end wall.

Tight Spaces

For smaller spaces choose lighter colors to give the room the illusion of being larger. This is also a great option for rooms that do not have much natural light.

Vaulted Ceilings

One of the most sophisticated tricks here is to paint a vaulted ceiling in a darker color than the walls. This will decrease the height of the room and give a more intimate, cozy feeling. Be careful to choose the paint carefully however because if not done properly it can give the room a suffocating effect.

3. Bedding

The bed is generally the centerpiece of the bedroom and is generally the first thing someone notices as they enter the room, so use it to set the tone of the room. Select bedding that reflects your personality and you are content with. For example, an animal lover may choose a zebra print bed set. There is a huge variety of colors and materials from which to choose including prints, solids, and floral, so decide upon the look you want in your room and select your bedding to match.

4. Floors

Floors are another area that can have a dramatic effect on the room. Changing the flooring is a major effort, but no matter what type of flooring you currently have, a simple solution is to consider an area rug. The right area rug can give the room a totally different appearance.

5. Headboard

Simply changing, creating or refurbishing the headboard of your bed can have a dramatic impact on the appearance of your bedroom. You can buy a new headboard or, if you are on a tight budget, try refurbishing your existing headboard. If you do not have a headboard, create the illusion of one by painting the design of a headboard on the wall behind the bed, or by cutting out the shape of a headboard using wall-paper and pasting it to the wall.

6. Lights

Light fixtures are essential and changing them can have a large impact on a room. It is also important to make sure that you have not only adequate lighting but lighting that can adjusted For example the fixtures next to the bed or lamps on your bedside table need to be bright for reading but easily dimmed or turned off for sleeping.

7. Pillows & Accessories

Give your bedroom polish by accenting the bedroom with strategically placed pillows and accessories which match the bedding you have chosen. This is simply achieved by starting with shams that match the bedspread or comforter. For a more dramatic look, you can choose Euro shams. Look around your room. Do you have a chair in the room? If so add pillow to the chair as well as the bed that will accentuate the room. Now consider your bedside table. What look are you trying to accomplish? Would brass go well with your interior? Choose items that will compliment your bedding. Whether simple knick knacks or picture frames, make certain they match the color or theme of your bedding.

8. Hardware

This is likely one of the easiest adjustments you will make to your bedroom. Simply replace your handles and knobs on doors, cupboards or furniture. As well as introducing something new and fresh to your room, the right selection can help set the tone of your bedroom to whatever you desire, whether traditional or contemporary.

9. Windows

Window treatments are one of the most important elements of the bedroom and need to consider the size and shape of the room. Do you have a lower ceiling? If so, selecting drapes that are long will elongate the walls and give the bedroom a grand appearance. To reach a more traditional look, choose drapes that accent the color of the walls. Consider using valances, but remember that with valances you will still need the addition of drapes or blinds in order to maintain your privacy.
