After all, just as the expression “National Office Furniture” sounds fairly generic, so is the concept of an office. An office can be a small room in your home from where you actually work, or a small, private room that is used for business-related work even if your actual livelihood is earned elsewhere.

Before we answer the question of how to design your office, we need to define what an office is. After all, just as the expression “National Office Furniture” sounds fairly generic, so is the concept of an office. An office can be a small room in your home from where you actually work, or a small, private room that is used for business-related work even if your actual livelihood is earned elsewhere. On the other hand, an office can be a huge room partitioned off into sections, rather like a national newspaper headquarters or a factory. Some offices are large and impersonal, while others are small and intimate. A lot depends on the number of people using it and whether members of the public are allowed in or out.

When you are designing your own office, there are two main factors that have to be taken into account: efficiency and aesthetics. On the one hand, you need your office to be the best place for yourself and your employees to work in. There needs to be enough computers and office equipment so that the job can be done. The chairs should be comfortable and the desks wide enough to accommodate everyone’s needs. There should be enough space to store stationery and other reserves. But on the other hand, the room should also be pleasing to the eye. After all, office workers need to feel comfortable with where they are. If they feel low and depressed by their surroundings, this will affect the standard of their work and their loyalty to the company.

Similarly, if your office is open to the public, you want your clients to feel impressed when they walk in. Remember that in the business world, first impressions are everything. Therefore, if a potential client walks in and thinks, “What a miserable looking old dump!” he will probably go elsewhere. At the same time, even if the office looks magnificent, if the atmosphere is not welcoming he will also take his business somewhere else. The office needs to look impressive on the one hand and reassuring on the other, so that your clients will see that you are a respectable operation and they will also feel safe and secure using your services.

If you have a flair for interior design, you can probably plan the layout of your office by yourself. But if you are not so gifted or you don’t have time to sit down and work it out, you are probably best advised to work with an office fitout company. When you choose one, you should take the following into account:
- How much they charge for their services
- How much of a budget you have available
- How long they say the work will take
- If the company has good references, and if you are able to go and see some of the offices that they have designed
- When you have chosen the company you want to use, make sure that you have a precise, written contract between you.

For more and more people every day, working from home is becoming the normal thing to do. Sometimes it can be difficult, but the freedom, not having to commute and setting you own hours is what most of us dream about doing. Although it may sound like the idyllic job, family distractions can make it difficult to concentrate and sometimes not having a “boss” looking over your shoulder makes you less disciplined and productive.

When working from home you still need to work in a professional environment and setting up a home office will help you stay focused and create surroundings that make you more industrious. The budget can be blown very quickly once you take note of all that you actually “want” in your new office space.

The best way forward is to make a list of the things that you “need” and be disciplined enough not to buy anything that is not on the list. As long as you are comfortable, all your paper work is organized in some sort of filing system, and you have one or two personal items displayed, you are on your way. As your business grows you can then upgrade to more luxurious office equipment and accessories.

Quickly Convert a Closet to a Home Office Nook

When I got my first computer and launched a consulting career more than a few years ago, I was desperate to create some type of office space in my tiny apartment. I couldn’t imagine where I was going to find that necessary nook until I found some inspiration in Martha Stewart and set about converting a closet into a functional and space saving home office nook – what a terrific concept!

With a bit of elbow grease and forethought, I was able to set up my first home office. Although my current office has expanded to include a work table and window, I still fondly remember the cozy sense of purpose I felt from my converted closet office nook.

Here are a few suggestions to quickly convert your closet into working office:

Remove the closet doors because you will feel completely closed in such a small space with a door. You may later want to replace a traditional door with sliding doors or a simple curtain to hide your office when company visits.

Take measurements and never eye anything. You simply don’t know if your old desk or file drawers will fit in the space until to take accurate measurements with a steel tape measure.

Now that you’ve removed the door and taken measurements, measure your existing office equipment to see what fits and what doesn’t.

Make a list of what you need. If your current desk doesn’t fit, consider installing your own tabletop inside the closet. I wasn’t that ambitious so I purchased a computer cart/workstation that worked quite nicely in small space because it also held a printer, speakers and had an area to store papers.

Create storage because there is no room for chaos in a convert closet office space. A small set of file drawers, shelves on the walls or even a built-in cabinet make great storage.

Where are your electrical outlets? Does your closet have an electrical outlet inside to use or is there one close enough outside the closet to run a power surge line? This may be an expense if you need to run electric into the closet. I choose to use an outlet right outside the closet, which wasn’t a problem when I removed the door.

As you can see, you can make convert the closet permanently by adding fixtures if you are renovating your own home or choose portable components to create a home office if you are renting. You can renovate your closet into a small yet luxuriously efficient office or an effective, sensible work space without breaking your budget or feeling claustrophobic.
