Step By Step Guide In Making A Rag Rug

The never-ending expenses and the unbelievably high prices of everything make do-it-yourself a sage idea. One very easy thing to do yourself that can aid in your home decorating are area rugs.

Materials:

All you need are old (or new) cloth. It can be clothes you no longer use, old sheets and other fabrics, and even rags. The materials are recycled and reused, so it slashes the expenses big time.

For the design, just have a crochet hook about size 11, scissors and a ruler or measuring tape on hand.

Steps:

Here are the easy to follow steps in making your own rag rug:

1. Cut off a strip of cloth but do not eat away the entire fabric. Leave out one inch of the cloth.

2. From the area where you stopped cutting, cut off a fabric of one and half inches. You will then have two strips of cloth but still attached together. As you make your next cut, don’t go all the way but stop cutting one inch before the end of the strip. As you keep cutting strips of cloth, always leave one inch on alternate sides. In other words, leave some space.

3. After finishing with cutting, roll the strips into balls. Decide then how you’re going to mix and match different colors or patterns for your rug. Hence, it’s better to use cloth or fabrics that have a nice color or design to consequently have a nice rag rug.

4. In one of the strips of cloth, make a slipknot and crochet six chains. This is the most basic stitches for crocheting. Make a slipstitch in the first chain. This will be the center of the rug.

5. After each cloth, stitch or tie on the next strip and continue as with the first strip of fabric.

6. To finish, tie the loose end with the loop of the main rug. Cut off the tip.

You can always adjust the loops in crocheting. If you feel like the rug is uneven, just remove some chains. With crocheting, it’s easy to loosen up the stitches and start again. If the rug curls up, try adding extra stitches to smoothen the cloth.

Voila! You now have your own made rag rug.
