Use a broom to sweep up the dust from the floor and your floor will look clean. To keep the shine and ensure that the fine dust doesn’t settle you could use a mop to mop the floor every other day if there are kids in the home otherwise, if there aren’t too many people living in the home you could mop twice a week.
When mopping the floor ensure you don’t use harsh detergents or acids as this will spoil the laminate on the floor. Use a mild detergent when mopping the floor and you could follow it up with a dry cotton or sponge wipe to give the floor that shine.

The main problem with cleaning laminate flooring is the moisture. When cleaning make sure that you do not use to much liquid, make sure you squeeze your mop so that it is damp not wet. If you add too much water it can go into the cracks and cause the laminate to warp.

Have you ever thought of how to stay warm in the winter? Well it is pretty simple actually. If you have stone flooring in your home then the best way to deal with it would be to lay rugs on the floor. This would keep the room warmer. Using rugs on the floor means you can take the carpets off during the summer to keep the place cool as well.

Another way of ensuring that the rooms stay warmer in the winter is to use heavy curtains to keep the cold out. If the house is a drafty house you could look at getting the gaps in the doors and windows blocked so that the heat stays in.

Another way of keeping your house warm would be to install under floor heating as heat rising from the floor tends to warm a room faster than wall mounted heating systems.

When it comes to home safety, it may at first seem obvious that every house and business should be fitted with a Burglar Alarm. After all, the idea is simple – if someone breaks in, the alarm goes off and will either frighten the intruder away or alert the police. But as criminal technology also advances, many times the criminals are ahead. For this reason, some argue that such alarms are a waste of time.

Let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of household or business alarms.

First of all, many alarms nowadays are directly connected to the police. So if someone breaks in, this will be heard and the police will be on the scene in minutes. This is particularly useful because most break-ins occur when the occupants of the building are not there. Therefore, the police will be notified even before the homeowner has to suffer the trauma of finding that their home has been burglarized.

Secondly, many household or car insurance policies insist on alarms being fitted. Therefore, the protection of your home is even more guaranteed and you will get more help and assistance if you have an alarm than if you don’t have one.

Thirdly, depending on your specific situation you can adapt your alarm to be more sensitive to intrusion, fire, or safety.

With all this in mind, however, there are some disadvantages to alarm systems:

First of all, some alarms are too sensitive and will go off at every little thing, such as a gust of wind or a cat running across the roof. If this happens too often, the police, your neighbors, and even you will become desensitized to hearing it and may not take it seriously the one time that the “false alarm” is actually a real one.

And what about if you forget to switch it off and you have the police outside your apartment for no reason? No one wants to go through that kind of embarrassment! Therefore you need to always be on the alert to switch it on or off when necessary.

Another problem is: how sophisticated are the burglars in your area? You may think that you have fitted the best, most state of the art system that you can find. But today’s burglars are more like sophisticated geeks and hackers than the dense criminals of yesteryear.

Therefore, we are still left with the question: Is it worth installing an alarm in your home or is it a waste of time?

If you are thinking of installing an alarm, apart from all the factors mentioned above, keep in mind the following:

- Make sure that the system you choose is properly suited to your home. State of the art doesn’t necessarily mean better. It’s more important to cover all your bases, including your skylights, chimneys, ground-floor windows, and more.
- Keep testing your alarm system to make sure it still works and that it won’t go off unnecessarily.
- Find a system that will work even if a part of it is disrupted. The intruders won’t be so clever if they can’t bring down the whole system at once.
- Hope for the best that it will all be unnecessary anyway …

If you are renting, redecorating a kitchen becomes very challenging as you can’t change much of the things in it since this is not your property. Thus, you are limited in your choices and preferences when it comes to decorating.

So how can you possibly decorate your kitchen without annoying your landlord? The trick here is to use proper accessories and small items that are not permanent and can easily be taken once you move in to a new place. Here are a few tricks how:

1. Make sure that the cupboards are clean and the doors are fixed.

2. Arrange your utensils and dishes in a creative way like you can have a colorful spice rack with some herbs and spices. They can look well in kitchens.

3. You should opt for washable rugs like acrylic rugs, which keeps the floor looking good.

4. Atmosphere and mood in the kitchen also matter. Try placing some scented candles so you can have a pleasant feeling while you are preparing food and cooking.

5. You can buy cheap items that are missing in your kitchen. You can always take them with you when you move into a new home.

Some people can be over sentimental when it comes to keepsakes, souvenirs and valuable items. But as time goes by, these items accumulate and eventually pile up your rooms excess space. Instead of becoming décor pieces, they tend to become clutter which definitely makes the room closed in and uncomfortable.

De-cluttering does not mean you have to throw away all these special mementos into the trash. There are easy ways to clean up your room without having to waste these precious items. All you have to do is put them in nice, utility boxes or plastic containers to lighten up your room and preserving these keepsakes at the same time.

We must admit that cleaning up could be very tiring and time consuming. That’s why it is very important to ask for your help from friends and family to make de-cluttering more fun and exciting. This way, you could also avoid throwing items that are special to other members of the family and rediscover old photos and memories that could give everybody a good laugh and recollections.

After rummaging through drawers, closets and even under your bed, you might be surprised on how much clutter has accumulated over time. Putting them inside plastic containers or customized boxes will ensure you that they will be well preserved from mildew and heat even if stored for another year or two.

Be sure to label your boxes so that you won’t have to spend countless of hours finding the things that you have kept aside. There are moments when you already needed these personal belongings and have to go through these boxes all over again. Categorizing these valuables would ensure that you will still be able to find it in no time.

Going green is not a fad that will pass away and a new one will replace it. We have spent too many years taking the planet for granted and everyone should be doing their best to ensure that they are helping out as much as possible. The biggest cause of pollution is the amount of energy that we consume. Unless you live next door to a power plant, most people do not realize the amount of smoke and pollution that is entering the atmosphere on a daily basis.

When people decide to go green with home decor they envisage spending tons of money to make their homes more energy efficient. Although this is sometimes needed, there are lots of little ways that you can help without breaking the budget.

If you live in a cold climate, buying heavier curtains and adding some rugs to your floors will make your home a lot warmer and reduce the heating bills. For those of you living in warmer climates, leaving the windows open and using a standard fan instead of air conditioning will dramatically cut the costs of your electricity bills and also reduce the amount of energy you consume.

Just these two ideas multiplied by all the people on the planet would make an enormous difference, it just takes everyone to work together on the small things to make a big difference.

New York street artist Katie Sokoler knows that there is no need to spend lots of money when it comes to decorating the walls of your home when you can just do it yourself!

It’s as simple as just buying your own brightly colored poster board paper, cutting it out, and taping it onto the wall! It’s definitely a fun project for everyone to do, at very low costs. It’s also a great way for parents and cildren to spend time together decorating the house.

While this may seem like a very amateur way to decorate the walls of your home, there are actually millions of possibilities! One idea is to cut out many different shapes and abstractly group them together, or to cut out more common things such as cartoon characters, fruit, and letters. You can also combine materials with this project, such as different colored yarn, ribbon, or colored tape. For those who are less creatively inclined, even just creating a mosaic of different colored poster board papers onto the wall can brighten up a room so much.

Image by Katie Sokoler via ColorMeKatie

To stick the paper onto your wall, simple masking tape will do the trick. You can also find inexpensive spray on adhesives at your local arts and crafts store. Just remember to open a window when using spray-ons indoors.

This project is definitely suitable for children’s rooms, toy rooms, and even in the college dorm, but with the same creative mind putting into choosing regular wall paper and home furniture, this project can really liven up any room in the house.

Planning a home improvement or renovation can be a stressful time. From coordinating on the designs to finding the right contractor, there are many steps and stages to overcome to make your home improvement a success. Unfortunately people are still making the same mistakes. In order for your next home improvement to be a success avoid these five common mistakes when you are performing your next renovation.

1) Planning Designs Based On Wants

Sometimes it is easy to get carried away and design a room that you would like rather than one you need. For example you might think you want to convert your basement into the perfect ‘guys’ room, with a bar and game rooms, but in reality the basement might be better used if it is designed with the kids in mind. The same can be said for every room in your house.

2) Overlooking Your Home’s Present Style

No matter how great your home improvement designs are, they will look out of place if you can’t incorporate them into your home’s present style and architecture. When planning your home improvement designs, think of them as a continuation of your current architecture style rather than trying to make them boldly stand out from the rest of your house.

3) Home Improvement Fads

Many people fall into the trap of designing their renovations around some of the more popular ones that are being shown on home improvement television shows. Or they are picking the same home improvements that friends, family and neighbours are doing. Home improvements are supposed to be a reflection of your own style and a long –term investment. In other words you want to ensure that you are making improvements according to your own style and tastes, and not just copying your neighbour’s.

4) Inexpensive Materials Versus Quality Materials

Home improvements are meant to be long-term investments, by choosing lower quality and inexpensive materials over quality ones you could be setting yourself up for disaster. Cheaply made materials will catch up with you, as they tend to wear out more quickly than quality materials do. If your budget is your main concern, why not scale back a bit on your home improvements. Instead of redoing the kitchen, basement and all the bathrooms in your house this year, pick the room that needs the most attention. Spend some time choosing the best materials for that room and shop around to see if you can get a better deal on those quality materials.

5) Forgetting About the Basics

It’s easy to get swept up in planning your home improvements to the point where you forget about the basic functions of your home. Many people get so caught up in designing the perfect kitchen, bathroom or basement that they forget about essential issues like storage and functionality. A beautifully designed kitchen is great, but if you have nowhere to store your dishes and cooking utensils the kitchen will not be functional.

So when it comes to planning your home improvement ideas make sure you keep in mind the cost of quality materials, design around your architecture, follow your own style, plan for storage and remodel a room where it will best suit the needs of your family.

You were most likely bending metal at the tender age of six or seven. Perhaps you would bend pipe-cleaners to make clowns or cats. Or you might have found paper clips more fun to bend. One thing is for certain, the metal you would bend as a child was not steel beams or tubes, and it never had to be strong enough to hold up a stadium roof or a roller coaster.

As adults, we rely on curved metal beams, pipe, tubes, and angles in everything from spiral staircases to skyscrapers. Visit any airport or museum built in the past couple decades and count the number of curved metal structures you find.

Have you ever wondered how they do it? I mean, how can you bend a steel beam and still keep the strength to support an airport roof? Well, there are four ways.

Rolling is the best known way to bend metal, perhaps because it is the least costly. Rolling uses an appropriate size die that adjusts to the steel tube, angle, pipe, channel, bar or steel beam and revolves at the same peripheral speed, turning in opposite directions. As the metal passes through the roll, the machine applies pressure to bend the tubing or the beam to the desired radius.

Rolling is effective when the material – metal, plastic, glass, whatever – must be bent a great deal. For instance, it can produce bends up to 360 degrees. This method is ideal for producing steel coils, spiral staircases and the like.

There are different kinds of rolling processes. Hot rolling (above the recrystallization temperature) mostly produces sheet metal. Most non-ferrous metal structures are rolled cold, but steel is usually rolled hot.

Because rolling requires less set-up work and uses pre-made dies, the cost is less than other ways to bend and form steel, so companies often choose this when it suits their specifications.

Mandrel bending is also fairly well known. In this process, a metal shaft, or mandrel, is fitted inside the steel tube or pipe. As the mandrel moves, it bends the metal around the appropriate sized die to form the radius.

Mandrel works best when the steel tube or pipe has a heavy wall and/or requires a tight radius because it prevents the material from rippling. Mandrel can only bend steel tubing up to 180 degrees, but it produces a bend that is uniform all the way up and down the pipe or tube. Obviously, this process is of little use for bending metal beams or sheets, however, it is used in bending exhaust pipes, molten glass and in very tiny cases, jewelry.

The Press method is the third way to bend metal. The steel tube, pipe, channel, bar or steel beam is fed through the press, which applies pressure every 6 or 7 inches until the material is bent to specifications

Press is used to bend bigger, heavier beams, pipes, channels, bars or tubes (24 inches or thicker) that do not require a very tight radius.

This is a less common process than rolling or mandrel. However, it is capable of producing large, load-bearing steel support beams used for schools, roofing, skyscrapers, gymnasiums, malls and bridges.

Table forming is the fourth process. The steel tube, pipe, or beam is laid out straight and the ends are pulled around the appropriate sized die to form the radius.

Table forming is used primarily to bend smaller, heavier steel tubes, pipes, channels, bars or steel beams that require a tight radius.

But if all that is too much for you, pick up those pipe cleaners and wow your kids with the colorful pipe-cleaner clowns you can form by bending metal at home.

We’ve heard it being said a million times that a stitch in time saves nine and while most of us try to implement it in many areas of our lives, our home sadly is one place where this rule is not followed especially when it comes to maintenance. Most of us are generally unaware about things that are going down the incline in our houses until the day that a final breakdown occurs. We end up taking necessary steps only after a switch has stopped working, a drain is badly clogged or when a tap has broken down. At times like these, we also end up calling professionals or spending more money than we otherwise would have if we had taken required steps at the beginning.

Just like regular maintenance and servicing of a vehicle keeps it in good running condition and makes sure that components do not break down or stop functioning midway, regular household maintenance is also necessary if you want to keep your home in perfect working order. Some tips on how you can get started with maintaining your home are:

Set up a weekly maintenance schedule for stuff that needs attention. You can inspect and repair anything that needs attention simply by sparing half an hour or less every weekend or on a weekday when you have time. This is the time when you tighten drawer and door knobs that have become loose, stick back portions of the carpet that are coming unstuck and change bathroom washers that are leaking. This weekly job will ensure that everything in your house is well maintained and that you will never have to spend a lot of money on home repairs at any point of time.

Pay special attention to safety and security. There are certain features in our home that should not be ignored but generally are because they are not used frequently. It is extremely important to keep things related to you and your family’s safety in top working condition. This includes checking upon and cleaning your fire and smoke alarms and ensuring that there is no dust or grime clogging them up. If you have a house with more than a single floor or live in a high rise, then make sure that your fire exit opens easily without effort and that your path to safety is clear of obstructions. Keep checking that all windows and shutter doors open easily since you might have to use these in order to escape in case of an emergency.

Check monthly on heating and cooling. If you live in a hot or dusty area, then you should make it a point to monthly check the cooling ducts and air conditioner for dust and blockage and clean them up. Similarly, you should change your furnace filter at the start of every winter or twice in the season if you live at a place where winters are long. Draining the hot water tank every month ensures that dust does not settle and clog your hot water supply every now and then.
