Popular Decorating Styles: French Country

French Country Home Décor: A Popular Home Decorating Choice

French country design is a very popular design choice today, even for those who have never been to France. Don’t let the idea of “French” design intimidate you because it’s actually quite easy to achieve this French country décor style.

French country design is influenced by the colors, textures, sights, and sounds of the Provence region of southern France. It’s all about living the good life, relaxing, and enjoying the world around you. But it’s also about working hard in order to get what you want out of life. Natural colors, fresh produce, rich fabrics, aromatic spices, deep red wines, dark metals, and rustic coziness are all a part of French Country décor.

How To Set a Fabulous Thanksgiving Dinner Table

The fall holiday season is just great; especially for kids (of all ages). Involving your children in holiday decorating allows you to share a very positive activity with them and gives you the opportunity to teach them something about the holiday at the same time.

When the holiday in question is Thanksgiving, there are a number of décor components children can find to make your Turkey Day table festive. Colored leaves are a great place to start. You can even make a game of finding them and give prizes for the biggest, most colorful and prettiest leaves. Be sure to collect a lot of leaves, and gently wash and pat them dry before using in your décor.

However, in any child’s room safety should be a priority and hanging drapes and curtain panels are not ideal. Achieving the Coziness of Cottage Interior Design

Cottage design style means romance, simplicity, coziness, and comfort. Think of it as comfort food for the soul! Light and airy colors, lots of pastels, floral patterns, pretty plaids, bold stripes, white furniture, and plenty of overstuffed pillows make cottage designed rooms a place you want to curl up with a good book in and stay all day.

The wall colors in cottage design are typically muted and understated. Pastel pinks, soft yellows, sky blues, gentle greens, and soothing lavenders are always acceptable. And of course, you can never go wrong with crisp, clean white! The colors should sort of be worn or faded looking and have that gentle sense of aging. This is not to say it should look old, but just have that been-there-awhile look. Imagine a cottage beach house on Nantucket in the springtime.

The walls in cottage design are usually painted solid colors all around. If you do paint an accent wall, make sure it’s of the same shade because cottage design is all about staying within the same color range. This monochromatic look adds to the soothing and uncomplicated feel of cottage design. Contrast should come in the form of white trim, woodwork, or beadboard. To get that classic cottage look you should have lots of white painted wood accents around the room. Consider adding beadboard and paint the ceiling, trim, and windows in crisp, bright white to make the muted wall colors stand out.

Cozy White Rooms That are Chic and Inviting – Not Cold and Impersonal

Many people believe that white is the absence of color and bland, but this is not the case. White actually comes in many different shades and tones to create a wide variety of moods in a room.

A pure white is quite rare and most shades of white have another color as an undertone, such as white or blue, which make the white warm or cool. There is a virtual wonderland of white tones to choose from, all with their own unique appeal and character.

Stylish Foyer and Hall Spaces

Maximize the Space in a Small Foyer or Hall with Style

Do you love the look of those stately homes of England with their huge entrance halls? On this side of the Atlantic, your home probably wasn’t blessed with an entry even half that big. However, even if your foyer or entry hall lacks enough space for a couple of inviting benches and a walk-in closet, you can still make it appear stylish and welcoming with a bit of planning and interior design deception.

Why deception? Because mirrors are the quickest and best way to visually expand small spaces, a fact that famed interior designer Billy Baldwin demonstrated way back in the 1930s, when many of his New York clients lived in apartments that lacked foyers and coat closets altogether. Indeed, in his own New York apartment, Baldwin cleverly used freestanding walls and bookcases to create an entry area and a pair of antique armoires to hold coats.

Creating a Victorian Christmas Tree

A Victorian Christmas Tree: Get the Look for Your Home

A Victorian Christmas tree is all about over-the-top opulence and excessive detail. The Victorian Christmas tree style started in 1841 when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert put one up and all of England followed suit. Victorian Christmas trees do not use the traditional red and green coloring that is typical today. Instead, more elegant colors were used, such as dusty roses, brilliant blues, deep burgundies, delicate ivories, and sparkling gold.

Victorian Christmas trees were often decorated with small toys, candy, popcorn strings, fruits, nuts, handmade ornaments, and baked goods. Individual candles were originally used, but with the invention of string lights the use of clear white lights are a much safer option for today’s Victorian Christmas trees.

Choosing Shelving Effectively For Your Home Decor

Shelves are the simplest, least expensive, and most versatile type of storage you can buy. Your choice should depend on practical considerations, such as strength and adaptability, as well as on good looks.

It’s tempting to imagine that tile first item a caveman invented was a shelf. At the very least, he would certainly have utilized any fiat ledge in the cave to store his tools and cooking pots. Finding somewhere to keep all your possessions, and leave space for your future belongings, is still an ongoing challenge in any home. To solve any shortage of storage and space, a combination of functional and decorative shelving is an attractive solution.
